Biography Raymond D. Smith is the Associate Dean of Executive Education at the Moore School of Business, University of South Carolina, where he is focused on ensuring that the school offers high-quality and innovative executive education programs. He is the designer of the new Multi-Modal Learning System, which leverages new communication technologies that enable people from across the globe to engage in Executive Education programs in interesting and dynamic learning environments while spending less time away from their workplace. Prior to coming to the Moore School, Smith was Associate Dean for Executive Education at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business, where he was responsible for Duke’s open enrollment programs. Before that, he was a Managing Director at Duke Corporate Education, where he led a team of professionals that designed and delivered custom executive education programs, advised global companies on their learning strategies, and developed new approaches to learning in Executive Education. While at Duke Corporate Education, Smith developed that entity's successful Business Challenge model of learning. Prior to his tenure at Duke, Smith worked for Deutsche Bank in Frankfurt, Germany, where he developed the concept of the Deutsche Bank Corporate University, designed and delivered customized executive education programs, and coached Deutsche Bank executives. He also provided an internal consulting service to the bank on change management issues. Before that, Smith was a management consultant and an organizational development manager for a large health care provider within the United Kingdom. In 1994, he developed and delivered a successful management development program for the Bulgarian government, funded by the European Union. Smith earned his MA degree in management learning at Lancaster University (UK) and is a member of the Institute of Personnel and Development (UK). He has also been an external examiner for the MA program in Management and Organizational Learning at the Bristol Business School at the University of the West of England. Previously, he was a director of the Association of Management Education and Development. A native of the UK, Smith has also lived and worked in France, Austria, and Germany. Smith’s publications include: Lernen als Motor des Wandels: ein neuer Ansatz fur Executive Education in der Deutsche Bank Corporate University, Verlag A&O des Wissens, 1999, co-authored with Martin Moehrle; and The Business Challenge Model and its Facilitation as a Global Learning Intervention, Strategisches personalmanagement in Global Unternehmen, with Joe Houde. He also authored Challenge Models: Leadership Development and Effective Team Based Solutions, Leader to Leader (special supplement). He has presented papers at Corporate University Exchange (CUX) international conferences and at ICEDR (the global learning alliance for management development professionals) conferences on topics related to Action Learning in organizations, organizational partnerships and e-learning.
