Martha Wetterhall Thomas

Martha Thomas founded the Center for Business Communication in 1997, drawing upon her experience as an educator and a business executive. She holds a BA in English from the University of Michigan, an MFA in creative writing from the University of South Carolina, and she is completing a Ph.D. in composition and rhetoric from the Department of English at USC. From 1994-95, she served as editor of the University of South Carolina literary journal, Yemassee , and from 1995-97, she was assistant director of the university's First-Year English Program. Before moving to Columbia, Martha worked in the marketing communications field in New York City, first as a copywriter for large, multinational advertising agencies, then as president of Thomas & Thomas, an award-winning agency she co-founded with her husband, Jim, a marketing executive.
