Orientation for Summer and Fall 2008

As indicated in your admission letter, orientation will be all day on Tuesday & Wednesday, August 19-20, for students entering in the summer or fall terms. Tuesday is mandatory for all students entering in the summer or fall terms. Wednesday is mandatory for all students who plan to participate in fall recruiting.  Mandatory means required without exception, so please make your plans for August accordingly.  Additional information about the orientation will be supplied to you at a later date. If you fail to receive an e-mail about the orientation schedule, please check the MACC Current Students Web page. There will also be a brief orientation for students entering in either of the summer terms on Monday, June 2nd at 1:00 pm in room 363. This is not mandatory, but you are highly encouraged to attend.

Continuing students who are planning to participate in fall recruiting are required to attend all of the Office of Career Management orientation sessions that will take up most of the day on Wednesday, August 20th and are welcome and encouraged to attend the orientation activities on Tuesday, August 19th.

International students should plan to be here at least a week before classes start in the summer and/or fall, to attend USC's International Program for Students orientation. Check http://www.sc.edu/ips/ for additional information.

Class Registration / Registration Memo

You should have already registered for classes, unless you are not eligible to register.  International students will not be eligible to register until they have attended USC's  International Program for Students orientation. If you have not already registered for classes, please pay your seat fee and register for classes as soon as possible. If a course that you need or would like to take is closed, do not panic; just send an e-mail to burkett@moore.sc.edu . If it is a required class that is only offered in one term, you will be given an override to register in the course.  If it is an elective or course that is offered in another term, then we will do our best to get you in the class.  Be sure to include your planned program of study along with your request.

After you have registered, please review it carefully and print it.  You can also view and print your bill. We advise you to check your schedule shortly before classes start, in case  changes are made in meeting time or location.

Prerequisite Courses

Note that completion of the prerequisite courses listed on the MACC Curriculum page is required in order to receive the MACC degree. If you have any questions about having met these requirements, please see Jimmy Burkett.

Office of Career Management

The Office of Career Management has established procedures regarding the preparation of acceptable resumes and participation in recruiting. In order to participate in this process, you must attend the Office of Career Management's orientation and workshops.  These are held during the summer or fall prior to the fall recruiting season. It is also imperative that you join Beta Alpha Psi and actively participate in its activities.

The Moore School of Business' Office of Career Management will have resume, behavioral interview, and JobMate workshops during orientation. These workshops are required for all students who plan to participate in recruiting.

In order to complete the resume workshop in a reasonable amount time, the Moore School Office of Career Management has asked that you complete your resume using the template provided prior to the orientation. You can find a link to this on the MACC Current Students Web page listed as "Resume Instructions and Template." Your resume MUST adhere to the template provided in this document.

Please name your resume: Yourlastname_Firstname_MACCResume.doc.
E-mail the resume as a Word document to:  MACCMTAX@moore.sc.edu
Deadline: August 1, 2008

A member of the Moore School Office of Career Management staff will critique your resume and communicate with you via e-mail to finalize the document.

Beta Alpha Psi

Beta Alpha Psi is a national accounting society. All MACC students must join Beta Alpha Psi. It provides an excellent opportunity to learn about the accounting profession and to meet with accounting professionals in an informal environment. There will be a Beta Alpha Psi representative at orientation to discuss membership requirements, etc.  Resumes: You should update your resume as much as possible.  You will have to supply Beta Alpha Psi with a current resume for the resume book almost immediately after classes start in the fall. Also, see the Office of Career Management for the resume template.

MACC Student Association

The MACC Student Association is a social organization with a couple of parties each year. It is a nice way to meet other graduate students and accounting faculty. You will receive notices about the socials by e-mail.

Graduate Student Lounge

The graduate student lounge is located in room 551. In addition to tables, chairs, etc, there are lockers which can be used on a first-come basis. The lounge is restricted to graduate students, and the access code is confidential. It changes during the summer. You should not give this code to anyone other than another Moore graduate student and should not allow anyone who is not a Moore graduate student into the lounge.

Graduate Computer Lab

The graduate computer lab is in room 501. You are also welcome to use the lab on the first floor of the Moore School. To access this lab or any Moore School lab you must use your ID/e-mail address to logon. There are two computers in the graduate lab. There are also tables, chairs as well as wireless access and power outlets for your laptops. If available, you should use the computers (on tall stands) at the entrance to the first floor computer lab to check e-mail and use the lab for other work. The 511 lab is restricted to graduate students and the access code will be given to you at orientation. You should not give this code to anyone other than another Moore graduate student and should not allow anyone who is not a Moore graduate student into the lab. If the graduate lab is full, you can also use the large lab on the first floor. You must bring your own paper for printing in any of the labs.

If you have any problems accessing any of the Moore School computers, please check with the staff member at the front desk of the first floor computer lab.

MACC Student Mailboxes

MACC student mailboxes are located in the School of Accounting - 3rd floor. The boxes will be in place by fall orientation. Please check your box as soon as you arrive and regularly thereafter.

Professional Examination Competency - Degree Requirement

As part of the degree requirement, students who enter the MACC program after the spring of 2002 are required to successfully pass a self-administered, simulated professional accounting examination similar to the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam. A link to " Professional Exam Competency Requirement" can be found on the MACC Current Students Web page.

Spring & Summer 2009 Course Offerings

The spring and summer 2009 MACC course offerings have not been finalized, but they will be very similar to spring & summer of 2008 which are available on the MACC Web page - Course Offerings for Current Year. At this time, the only 500-level courses that will be offered in the summer of 2009 are ACCT 503 & 505 in summer I and ACCT 504 in summer II. Considering this information, you should review your planned program of study and if needed, make adjustments to ensure you can graduate as planned.

Fees, Financial Awards & Fee Payment

Links to fee payment information, including a detailed calendar and fee payment schedule) can be found on the Registrar's Student page.  Once registered for class, print and review your bill from VIP.  The fee payment deadline is 5:00 pm on the first day of classes.  Failure to pay fees on time will result in your registration being cleared and the need to re-enroll in classes.  This can result in difficulty obtaining the classes needed for this semester due to the fact that seats may no longer be available for the classes needed.  If you need assistance with fee payment, contact the Bursar's Office at 803-777-4233.

2008-2008 resident fees for incoming MACC students are $405 per credit hour and non-residents fees are $680 per credit hour.  If the $400 seat fee has been paid, it will reflect in your tuition for the first semester; however, it will not be shown as a separate item.  For example, a SC resident taking 12 hours in the fall with tuition at $370 per credit hour, having paid the $400 seat fee with the fall semester being their first term will receive a bill that shows COLA TUITION FALL $4,460.  [(12 hrs x $405) = $4,860 - $400]

For students with merit-based financial aid, fellowship awards should be in place for the Fall semester.  Fellowship awards are shows as Business Admin Scholarhip and fee reductions are shown as Misc Scholarship under Financial Awards on VIP and both must be applied to your account per the instructions (Using Your Aid to Pay Your Fees) on VIP.  If your Moore School fees, fellowship award, or fee reductions are not correct, you should contact Scott Kaplan at 803-777-3601 or by e-mail at sgk@moore.sc.edu.

Student loans must be applied to your account per the instructions (Using your Aid to Pay Your Fees) on VIP.  If your student loan proceeds are not shown or are incorrect, you must contact Financial Aid.

Recruiting Events
Please check the Calendar of Important Dates on the MACC student's page for firm recruiting socials.  If an invitation is available, the event will be underlined.  Click on this hyperlink for the formal invitation and RSVP information.  If detailed informaiton is not available, check back often as it will be posted as received.  The Beta Alpha Psi calendar is available at http://mooreschool.sc.edu/moore/organizations/bap/bap-calendar.htm.  All MACC students participating in recruiting are eligible and required to join and participate in Beta Alpha Psi functions.
