The Arnold School — one of the nation’s first schools of public health — is the only school of public health in South Carolina that meets comprehensive accreditation requirements. For nearly 50 years, it has been South Carolina’s go-to resource, partner and leader in public health research and education. What’s more, the Arnold School has earned recognition as one of the nation’s leading research institutions, ranking No. 6 among all public universities in funding from the National Institutes of Health.

Exploring the world of research at Discover USC
Each year, Discover USC showcases the wide-ranging research being done by University of South Carolina students and postdocs. From health science to humanities and AI to public health, USC scholars — including undergraduate and graduate students, medical scholars and postdocs — are working with faculty mentors and others to explore topics that interest them, learn more about research skills and work on how to present their findings to an audience.

Where is it most difficult to access healthy food in South Carolina? It’s an important question. More than half a million South Carolinians experience food insecurity. National data shows that those impacted the most are Black, Latino or from indigenous, low-income and rural communities.

April is Autism Acceptance Month. The CDC estimates that 1 out of every 36 eight-year-olds is affected by autism, a lifelong developmental disorder. As South Carolina’s leader in health sciences, USC has researchers across disciplines who specialize in autism.
From Aphasia to Rural Health
The Arnold School houses and partners with a wide array of centers, institutes and programs that conduct research, translate and disseminate data, and connect with the public through clinical and other services. Its outreach impacts countless populations in South Carolina and the world. The Arnold School is home to the nation’s oldest Alzheimer’s Disease Registry, which began gathering data in 1988 — a full 20 years before the next oldest registry of its kind.
